Fighting for Rights of Immigrants and Non-Citizens, Lacey and Larkin

Anyone who leaves his or her motherland to relocate to a foreign country is considered an immigrant. Working and living in a new country comes with its fair share of challenges. The law, in most nations, requires immigrants to meet certain conditions to live and/or work in the country.

It also provides their rights and freedoms. However, some people still infringe on these rights. That’s why there are several organizations that advocate for the rights of immigrants. Here are a number of activist groups that speak for immigrants in the United States.

CAIR

The Council on American Islamic Relations is dedicated to fighting against discrimination against Muslims. Immigrants from Islamic nations are often discriminated because they’re considered to be extremists who are a threat to America’s security. Members and leaders of CAIR speak against this misconception. They advocate for better treatment of Muslims, from both law enforcers and the public.

Black Alliance for Just Immigration

Otherwise known as BAJI, this group advocates for the civil rights of black immigrants. Most BAJI members are African Americans who work tirelessly to fight against social, economic and racial injustices. This organization’s network consists of lawyers, civil servants and clerics like Rev. Phillip Lawson and Rev. Kelvin Sauls.

Families for Freedom (FFF)

FFF is an activist group known for its campaigns against unfair deportation, imprisonment and harassment of immigrants from different countries across the globe. The organization is based in New York and has thousands of members. FFF believes that immigrant families should be discriminated because of their race of economic background. The human right activist group runs campaigns to inform the public about issues affecting immigrants. CUNY CLEAR

CLEAR works towards ensuring immigrants are treated well by American citizens and law enforcers. Most members are law students from various institutions. The leaders are professional attorneys. CUNY CLEAR focuses on fighting for the human rights of immigrant communities in New York City. They work with other civil right groups to address the needs of those affected by counter-terrorism policies and nation security issues.

Immigrant Legal Resource Center

ILRC is unique from the other organizations mentioned here. It trains immigrant attorneys and advocates on immigrant rights. Members of ILRC take part in both local and federal works of advocacy. The non-profit resource center also hosts training workshops for members of the public to advance the rights of immigrants. It also accepts donations to support refugee education programs.

About the Larkin & Lacey Fund

In 2007, Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin were arrested for some articles they had published. They were forcefully taken from their homes in the middle of the night. Sherif Joe Arpaio didn’t have any lawfully reason of detaining the duo. His had ill intentions of suppressing the constitutional rights of Lacey and Larkin. In addition, he mistreated them because they were immigrants.

Jim and Michael were released and awarded a settle of $3.75 million. They established the Lacey and Larkin Fontera Fund to help the Hispanic community. The duo used their settlement money to fund organizations that advocate for the rights of immigrants.
